Whitecaps get a jump start

A couple of catch phrases spring to mind as the Vancouver Whitecaps get set to raise the curtain on a new United Soccer Leagues First Division season. One is "Freddy is ready." The other: "Left is humming along just right."

As far as pre-season exhibition games go -- and not a lot can be read into those results, because the Caps played only one league opponent -- Alfredo Valente re-established himself as the team's primary playmaker and scoring threat along the left flank of midfield.

Valente did it in a manner that suggested he's closer to mid-season form than Saturday's season-opening match against the Seattle Sounders at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium.

The stats tell part of the story for the 26-year-old Vancouver-born, Burnaby-raised linkman: One goal in the Caps' 7-1 rout over the Fraser Valley League all-stars on March 27.

Over 40? LASIK Eye Surgery Succeeds

April 20, 2007 -- More and more baby boomers are having laser eye surgery to free themselves from contacts, bifocals, and even reading glasses. Now new research finds that most can expect good outcomes when they have realistic expectations.

"Patients 40 and over present special challenges, and they need to understand that going in," laser surgeon Jose de la Cruz Napoli, MD, tells WebMD. "But we have [surgical] options to give them full vision correction, so they can see well near and far away."

Along with colleagues from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, de la Cruz Napoli examined outcomes from 710 eyes which had laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgeries performed on 424 patients between the ages of 40 and 69.

Following the surgeries, 20/30 vision (a person with 20/30 vision can see something clearly at 20 feet what a person with 20/20 person can see at 30 feet.) was restored in 86% to 100% of eyes corrected for nearsightedness and 80% to 84% of eyes corrected for farsightedness.

Blind aviator comes to aid of visually impaired

Visual impairment is not a big problem and those, who remain mum thinking that they are blind, are not aware of their potentialities, said Miles Hilton-Barber, a blind aviator and adventurer.

"The only limits in our lives are those that we accept ourselves. Strong determination, and most importantly the support from all, can lift the bar of physical challenges," said Miles, who arrived in Dhaka on April 2 on a three-day goodwill visit to support the fund raising for Standard Chartered Bank's 'Seeing is Believing' programme.

While talking to journalists at a press conference at a city hotel organised by Standard Chartered Bank, Miles said, "Sight is a wonderful gift many take for granted. Whilst I will never see again in this life, but many people of the developing countries may get back this priceless gift by the money being collected through our flight."

On March 7, Miles ventured out on his latest challenge 'Flight for Sight' to become the first blind aviator in history to fly halfway around the world through a specially customised microlight plane and since then he had travelled 20 countries, the organisers said.

MRSA can be a serious post-operative complication

In particular, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which has been found in many healthcare settings, can be a serious post-operative complication.

In a study published in the April issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers found MRSA infections in the eyes of 12 patients after refractive surgery.

These are the first cases of MRSA infectious keratitis following refractive surgery, the first reports of MRSA keratitis after refractive surgery in patients with no known exposure to a healthcare facility, the first report of MRSA keratitis after a laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) enhancement, and the first reports of MRSA keratitis after prophylaxis with fourth generation fluoroquinolones.

Colonization of MRSA has been found in 1.5% of the general population, but as many as 9.4% of those were exposed to a healthcare facility.
